A sketchbook is the foundation of every strong artist's practice. It is where ideas are explored, problems are solved, risks are taken, and creative thinking develops over time. More than a collection of sketches, it documents curiosity, experimentation, reflection, and growth. For college admissions, a sketchbook offers something a finished portfolio alone cannot—it reveals how a student thinks. Admissions reviewers want to see evidence of sustained investigation, creative problem-solving, and the evolution of an authentic artistic voice. Simply put, the portfolio is the destination; the sketchbook is the journey. A consistent sketchbook practice not only leads to stronger artwork and more compelling portfolios, but also builds the creative habits that students will carry throughout their artistic lives.
